What it means

A behavior that only works in a quiet kitchen isn't actually reliable, proofing is the deliberate process of practicing it across the three Ds (distance, duration, distraction) one variable at a time, so it holds up wherever it's actually needed. Skipping proofing is one of the most common reasons owners feel like their dog "knows" a cue but won't do it outside the house.

A real example

After a dog reliably sits in the living room, its owner practices the same cue in the backyard, then on a quiet street, then near a park, gradually raising the difficulty.

A worked example

Yuki's dog stays reliably in the living room. Before using it at a cafe, she tests it in the garden with a family member walking by, then at a quiet cafe patio, then at a busy one. At each step she lowers the difficulty if the dog breaks.

Signs it is working

• The behavior holds in several locations.
• It holds when you move, talk or walk away.
• It holds when a distraction appears.

What it is not

Proofing is not testing to catch the dog out. It is gradual practice so the dog can succeed in harder situations.

How to use it

1. Choose the one situation to proof, such as a visitor at the door.
2. Start with a mild version, a family member standing still across the room.
3. Reward success generously, and make the next step slightly harder.
4. Work toward the real situation in a gradual progression, rather than jumping straight to the hardest case.

How do I know a behavior is proofed?

When it works reliably at different distances, durations and distractions in several locations. A good test is whether it holds in places you have not practiced.
