How to stop a dog
jumping up.
Dogs jump up to say hello and to get attention, and almost everything people do about it, pushing, talking, kneeing, is attention, so it keeps working. Here is the calm method that actually teaches four paws on the floor.
Quick answer
To stop a dog jumping on people, remove the reward jumping earns (attention) and pay the dog for keeping four paws on the floor instead. The instant the dog jumps, give nothing, no eye contact, no words, no touch, and turn away or step back. The moment all four feet are down, mark and reward calmly. Teach an alternative the dog can do instead, like sit or going to a mat, and reward it heavily when people arrive. Manage greetings while you train: keep the dog on a leash or behind a baby gate so they cannot rehearse the jump, and ask visitors to ignore the dog until it is calm. Avoid kneeing, shouting or pushing, to an excited dog these read as rough play or attention and make jumping worse. Consistency from everyone the dog greets is what makes it stick, usually within a couple of weeks.
01 · The method
Seven steps to four
paws on the floor.
The dog jumps because it works. Take away the payoff for jumping, hand the payoff to calm greetings instead, and the behavior flips, no scolding required.
01
Understand why dogs jump
Jumping is a greeting and an attention-seeker, dogs go for our faces and learn that leaping gets a reaction. It is friendly, not dominant. Knowing it is about attention is the key, because it tells you exactly what to withhold.
02
Remove the reward
The moment the dog jumps, become boring: no eye contact, no talking, no touching. Turn away or step back so the paws meet nothing but air. The fun of the greeting disappears the instant the feet leave the floor.
03
Reward four on the floor
The very second all four paws are down, mark with a 'yes' and reward calmly at the dog's level. You are making the floor the place where good things happen, so the dog chooses to keep their feet there.
04
Teach a better way to say hi
Give the dog an alternative behavior to do when people approach, usually a sit or going to a mat, and reward it generously. A dog that has a clear, rewarded job at greetings does not need to invent jumping.
05
Manage greetings while you train
Until the new habit is strong, prevent rehearsals: keep the dog on a leash you can stand on, or behind a baby gate, when people arrive. Every jump that gets a reaction sets you back, so stop them happening while you teach the replacement.
06
Brief your visitors
Most guests reward jumping without meaning to. Ask them to ignore the dog until it is calm, then greet it down at its level for a sit. A quick heads-up at the door is the difference between training and chaos.
07
Be consistent, everyone, every time
Jumping survives when one person allows it and another does not. Agree that nobody rewards a jump and everybody rewards calm, and the behavior usually fades within a couple of weeks. Mixed messages are what keep it alive.
Most-searched questions
The questions people
actually ask.
Why does my dog jump on people?
To greet them and to get attention. Dogs aim for our faces and quickly learn that jumping earns a reaction, even a push or a 'no' is attention. It is friendly excitement, not an attempt to dominate, which is why the fix is to remove attention for jumping and give it for calm.
Does kneeing a dog in the chest stop jumping?
No, and it can hurt the dog or be read as rough play that encourages more jumping. Physical corrections also damage trust. Turning away to remove attention, then rewarding four-on-the-floor and a sit, is both kinder and more effective.
How do I stop my dog jumping on guests?
Manage and rehearse. Keep the dog on a leash or behind a gate when guests arrive so it cannot practice jumping, ask visitors to ignore the dog until calm, and reward a sit for the greeting. With repetition, the doorbell starts to mean 'sit for a treat' instead of 'launch at the visitor'.
How do I stop a puppy jumping up?
Exactly the same way, and it is easier the earlier you start. Never reward the jump with attention, reward four paws down and a sit, and ask everyone to do the same. Prevent the puppy practicing on excited children or guests while the habit is forming.
How long does it take to stop a dog jumping?
With consistency from everyone the dog greets, most dogs improve within one to three weeks. The biggest variable is not the dog but the people, every person who reacts to a jump resets the clock, so the whole household and your visitors need to be on the same page.
