What it means
Socialization is most impactful during a puppy's primary socialization window, roughly 3 to 14 weeks of age, when the brain is unusually receptive to forming positive associations with novelty. That said, socialization isn't strictly limited to puppyhood; adult and rescue dogs can still build confidence and reduce fear-based behavior through careful, positive exposure, it typically just takes more patience and a slower pace.
A real example
A well-socialized puppy has positive, low-pressure experiences with several different types of people, surfaces, sounds, and other vaccinated, friendly dogs during its first few months.
Common mistake
Confusing socialization with simply "being around" other dogs or people regardless of whether the experience is actually positive, a scary or overwhelming encounter can do more harm than good.
