What it means

A trigger, another dog, a doorbell, a skateboard, a specific type of person, reliably provokes fear, excitement, or reactivity in a dog that has learned (often through a single strong experience or repeated exposure) to associate it with something significant. Identifying a dog's specific triggers precisely is usually the first real step in any counter-conditioning or desensitization plan.

A real example

A dog that was startled badly by a skateboard as a puppy may treat all skateboards, and sometimes similar rolling objects, as a trigger years later.

Common mistake

Assuming a trigger is obvious or identical across dogs, when in reality it's often quite specific (a skateboard but not a bicycle, or men in hats but not women).
