What it means

Rather than waiting for a full behavior to happen at once, shaping breaks it into small, achievable pieces and rewards each approximation as the dog gets closer to the finished behavior. It requires good timing and patience but can build surprisingly sophisticated behaviors, from a reliable "go to your mat" to complex trick sequences.

A real example

Teaching a dog to close a cupboard door might start by rewarding it for looking at the door, then touching it with its nose, then pushing it slightly, then finally pushing it all the way shut.

A worked example

Nina wants her dog to touch a lid with its paw. She first rewards looking at the lid, then moving toward it, then touching it with a nose, then lifting a paw, then touching with the paw. In ten short sessions, the dog is pawing the lid on purpose.

Signs it is working

• The dog tries new variations to earn rewards.
• It stays engaged and does not give up.
• It shows steady progress toward the final behavior.

What it is not

Shaping is not waiting for a miracle. You raise the standard step by step, so the dog always has something that pays.

Why it matters

Shaping teaches dogs to think and try things, which builds confidence and lets you train behaviors you cannot lure or capture.

How to use it

1. Define the final behavior and break it into small steps.
2. Mark and reward the smallest step toward it, such as looking at the target.
3. Raise the standard slowly, rewarding only closer approximations.
4. If the dog gets stuck, go back a step and reward more generously.

How long should a shaping session last?

A few minutes. Keep it fun, end on a success, and take breaks. Frustration is a sign you need smaller steps.
